The cow-herd has yet to show large signs of rebuilding. According to Dr. Derrell Peel, heifer retention from calf crops has not seen a true uptick yet, though the liquidation of mature cows at least seems to have slowed – indicating we are in for high-calf demand for some time yet¹. But, for how long?

- [Mastitis](https://mycentralstar.com/mastitis-pcr/): Mastitis in dairy cows is an inflammation of the mammary gland, usually caused by bacterial infection. It's a common and costly disease in the dairy industry, impacting milk production, cow health, and farm profitability. Mastitis can be clinical, with visible signs like swelling and abnormal milk, or subclinical, with no visible symptoms but reduced milk quality and quantity.
- [Johnes Testing](https://mycentralstar.com/johnes-testing/): Johne’s disease is a contagious, chronic, and usually fatal infection that primarily affects the small intestine of ruminants. It is found worldwide. Signs of Johne’s disease in cattle include weight loss and diarrhea with a normal appetite but are rarely evident until two or more years after infection. The causative bacteria are Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP), and transmission is primarily fecal/oral to calves less than six months of age.
- [BVD Testing](https://mycentralstar.com/bvd-testing/): BVDV is a common cause of respiratory and reproductive issues and is a key component in the bovine respiratory disease complex. Direct and indirect costs to BVDV infection in a herd can include loss of cows and calves, loss in meat and milk, additional labor wages and medications, reproductive inefficiencies, and immunosuppression. Cattle of all ages are susceptible to BVDV infection. Animals can have an acute or persistent infection. Animals that test positive for BVDV can be retested in three weeks to differentiate between the two types. Despite the name, this virus does not always involve diarrhea.
- [BLV Testing](https://mycentralstar.com/blv-testing/): The USDA estimates that Bovine Leukemia Virus (BLV) has infected 38% of all beef herds and up to 94% of all dairy herds in the United States, with approximately 45% of all dairy cows infected. Taking action against BLV can improve overall herd health and profitability. Bovine leukosis, caused by BLV infection, is a complicated disease and eradication needs to be a multi-pronged approach. While most animals show no outward signs or symptoms of BLV, cows with advanced disease can develop lymphomas that lead to death or condemnation at slaughter. Before clinical signs, BLV suppresses the immune system, impacting cow performance and profitability by:

- [A1/A2 Testing](https://mycentralstar.com/a1-a2-testing/): Beta-casein makes up 30 percent of milk protein and comes in two forms: A1 and A2 beta-casein. The difference between A1 and A2 beta-casein is determined by the genetics of the animal. Reports indicate that A2 beta-casein proteins are potentially more favorable to digest due to the change in protein structure. Milk being marketed as A2 claims the product does not contain the A1 protein. Studies have linked possible health benefits to A2 milk consumption. While health benefits are still being debated, A2 milk is selling in the USA and other markets at a premium over standard milk.
