Yet, a look at this 1,000-cow herd, shows cows with an average lactation somatic cell score (SCS) of 4.0 or greater produced 900 fewer pounds of energy-corrected milk (ECM) per cow compared to herdmates with lower SCS. While only 7% of the herd fell into this higher SCS category, the lost milk still added up to nearly $12,000 in unrealized production. - [The POINT – Spring 2026](https://mycentralstar.com/the-point-spring-2026/): See what’s new at CentralStar with the latest edition of The POINT! The beef-cow herd, reduced by mass liquidations over the past few years due to drought, input costs, and interest rates, was at its smallest in decades at just 27 million (Figure 1). This decline has made beef on dairy calves essential to keeping feedlots at capacity. This domestic decline in beef cattle, alongside the screwworm-driven border closures preventing American feeders from sourcing Mexican cattle to fill their yards, drove feeder-calf prices up, up, and away to an average nearing $400/cwt (Figure 1) in the fall of 2025. The cow-herd has yet to show large signs of rebuilding. According to Dr. Derrell Peel, heifer retention from calf crops has not seen a true uptick yet, though the liquidation of mature cows at least seems to have slowed – indicating we are in for high-calf demand for some time yet¹. But, for how long? - [Top dairies recognized for reproductive excellence with CentralStar ReproStar Awards](https://mycentralstar.com/top-dairies-recognized-for-reproductive-excellence-with-centralstar-reprostar-awards/): CentralStar Cooperative has announced the winners of its ReproStar Awards, recognizing four dairy operations for elite reproductive performance and introducing a new Most Improved Award to spotlight measurable year-over-year gains in herd fertility. - [Dick Piechowski 2025 Pioneer Award](https://mycentralstar.com/dick-piechowski-2025-pioneer-award/): CentralStar Cooperative has named Richard “Dick” Piechowski, Waupaca, Wis., as the 2025 Pioneer Award recipient, honoring his decades of leadership and lasting impact on the cooperative and its members. Are the common strategies used to combat mastitis truly addressing the root of the problem? - [What the genetic base change and NM$ revisions mean to you](https://mycentralstar.com/what-the-genetic-base-change-and-nm-revisions-mean-to-you/): Every five years, the Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding (CDCB) updates the genetic base to reflect the ongoing progress in dairy genetics. This ensures predicted transmitting abilities (PTAs) remain relevant by comparing today’s animals to a more current reference population. Today, PTAs are based on cows born in 2015; but, after the April 2025 update, they will be measured against cows born in 2020. While the genetics of individual animals remain unchanged, their PTA values will shift to reflect this new baseline. Table A shows the expected base change to occur in 2025 compared to the previous two base changes the Holstein breed has experienced. - [The POINT – Spring 2025](https://mycentralstar.com/the-point-spring-2025/): See what's new at CentralStar with the Spring 2025 edition of The POINT! Approximately 75% of fetal growth occurs during the final 90 days of gestation and the cow herself is preparing for the challenges of the calving process. Unquestionably, the calving day is the most traumatic of the year for the cow. Sometimes, the process of making colostrum, or the calf’s first meal, gets lost in the crush of all the metabolic processes occurring as the big day of calving approaches, yet colostrum quantity and quality may determine calf livability and health for the rest of its life into the feedlot or breeding herd. - [January 2025 DHI ECM Top Herds](https://mycentralstar.com/january-2025-dhi-ecm-top-herds/): The monthly DHI ECM Top Herds report ranks the top Holstein and High-Components Breeds herds for Energy Corrected Milk (ECM). Heifer non-completion rate is defined by the number of heifer replacements that never make it to the lactating herd divided by the total number of heifers born alive. - [Get more from your beef breeding program in 2025](https://mycentralstar.com/get-more-from-your-beef-breeding-program-2/): CentralStar Beef Specialists Trevor Yager, Adam Wood, and Scott Ellevold, along with Select Sires Sire Analyst Jon Herrick share insight into breeding strategies, genetic selection, and herd-improvement techniques. - [Milk fever vs. subclinical hypocalcemia: Are your fresh cows truly covered?](https://mycentralstar.com/milk-fever-vs-subclinical-hypocalcemia-are-your-fresh-cows-truly-covered/): Are you only treating cows with visible milk fever symptoms? - [Maximize your calving season: Tips for a successful program](https://mycentralstar.com/maximize-your-calving-season-tips-for-a-successful-program/): As we look to rebuild the U.S. beef-cow herd and meet the increasing demand for high-quality- beef products, we must strive to enhance the efficiencies of all beef-production enterprises. Profitability and efficiency in the cow-calf sector is heavily dependent on the reproductive efficiency of herds. One way to improve reproductive success in cow-calf operations is by using estrus synchronization in conjunction with A.I. Estrus synch programs can be as simple as one injection, or a series of products, each administered to help get the maximum number of animals pregnant early in the breeding season, resulting in more calves being older and heavier at the time of weaning. - [Improving Blood Ionized Ca with the Ca3 BioFresh® Bolus](https://mycentralstar.com/new-milk-fever-research/): Despite the wide-spread adoption of negative-dietary cation-anion differential close-up diets, an estimated 25-50% of newly freshened 2nd lactation and greater cows will experience... - [CentralStar Cooperative hires 2025 summer interns](https://mycentralstar.com/centralstar-cooperative-hires-2025-summer-interns/): WAUPUN, Wis., Jan. 20, 2025 – CentralStar Cooperative, serving dairy and beef producers in the upper Midwest, is welcoming eight individuals to its summer 2025 internship program. It is found worldwide. Signs of Johne’s disease in cattle include weight loss and diarrhea with a normal appetite but are rarely evident until two or more years after infection. The causative bacteria are Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP), and transmission is primarily fecal/oral to calves less than six months of age. - [BVD Testing](https://mycentralstar.com/bvd-testing/): BVDV is a common cause of respiratory and reproductive issues and is a key component in the bovine respiratory disease complex. Direct and indirect costs to BVDV infection in a herd can include loss of cows and calves, loss in meat and milk, additional labor wages and medications, reproductive inefficiencies, and immunosuppression. Cattle of all ages are susceptible to BVDV infection. Animals can have an acute or persistent infection. Animals that test positive for BVDV can be retested in three weeks to differentiate between the two types. Despite the name, this virus does not always involve diarrhea. - [BLV Testing](https://mycentralstar.com/blv-testing/): The USDA estimates that Bovine Leukemia Virus (BLV) has infected 38% of all beef herds and up to 94% of all dairy herds in the United States, with approximately 45% of all dairy cows infected. Taking action against BLV can improve overall herd health and profitability. Bovine leukosis, caused by BLV infection, is a complicated disease and eradication needs to be a multi-pronged approach. While most animals show no outward signs or symptoms of BLV, cows with advanced disease can develop lymphomas that lead to death or condemnation at slaughter. Before clinical signs, BLV suppresses the immune system, impacting cow performance and profitability by: - [Genomic Testing Consulting](https://mycentralstar.com/genomic-testing-consulting/): Even when the individual segments of your dairy are operating at top performance, opportunities for optimizing total outcomes still exist. The difference between A1 and A2 beta-casein is determined by the genetics of the animal. Reports indicate that A2 beta-casein proteins are potentially more favorable to digest due to the change in protein structure. Milk being marketed as A2 claims the product does not contain the A1 protein. Studies have linked possible health benefits to A2 milk consumption. While health benefits are still being debated, A2 milk is selling in the USA and other markets at a premium over standard milk. - [Scholarship](https://mycentralstar.com/scholarship/): CentralStar is committed to investing in the next generation of agriculture leaders.
