Entry-Level Milk-Sample Technician
Hours:
Full-time, first shift
Location: Grand Ledge, Mich.
Full-time entry-level Milk-Sample Technicians work as part of a team in a state-of-the-art milk-sample-processing environment. Under the guidance of the facility supervisor, Milk-Sample Technicians carefully view and analyze milk samples for a variety of data points. They provide assistance to ensure equipment is operating properly, while making sure all samples are processed correctly by following strict guidelines set by the National Dairy Herd Information Association.
Day-to-day responsibilities:
- Assist with moving and organizing milk samples for processing;
- Perform accurate preparation of various chemicals for analysis of milk samples;
- Use state-of-the-art equipment to analyze milk samples;
- Prepare sample vials for use by team members in the field;
- Work together to maintain inventory and supply levels to ensure compliance with quality control;
- Clean equipment and work area; and
- Other duties as assigned.
- There may occasionally be opportunities to assist DHI Specialists on farm and provide relief help in the sample-delivery department.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required;

- Demonstrates the ability to operate all testing equipment and supplies according to procedural standards on a daily basis;

Your purpose:
Experience a career working with CentralStar Cooperative, a member of the Select Sires Federation and the fastest-growing Dairy Herd Information (DHI) program in the United States. As the Information Technology (IT) Manager for our agricultural cooperative, you’ll be responsible for managing IT-support relationships and acting as systems administrator for the goal of overseeing the cooperative’s computer networks and continually efforting improvement of the company’s network systems. You’ll work closely with directors and business-unit managers to identify hardware, software, and data needs, as well as scheduling support, training, installation, etc. as needed.
Day-to-day responsibilities:
- Manage relationships between IT vendors (currently Convergence Networks and Algorithm) and the cooperative;
- Consult with management and other team members regarding needs for data, computers, communication, personnel requirements, processing schedules, and regulatory and legal responsibilities;
- Confer with data-processing and project managers to obtain information on limitations and capabilities of existing system and capabilities required for data-processing projects and projected workload;
- Evaluate factors such as the number of departments serviced by data-processing equipment, reporting formats required, volume of transactions, time requirements, cost constraints, security, and access restrictions to determine hardware configurations;
- Administer network system and customer-relationship-management system;
- Maintain infrastructure, hardware, back-up, and cloud services (via Convergence);
- Analyze information to determine, recommend, and plan layout for type of computers and peripheral equipment, or modifications to existing system, that will provide capabilities for proposed needs;
- Monitor functioning of equipment;
- Enter data to store, retrieve, and manipulate it for analysis;
- Train users of new or modified equipment and/or software programs;
- Consult with business units to establish emergency protocol;
- Manage the implementation of disaster-recovery plans in the event of a disaster or emergency;
- Assist in the preparation and management of an annual business-unit budget;
- Work collaboratively with members of the executive-staff team to understand business strategies, goals, objectives, and key performance measures;
- Actively work to expand personal knowledge through professional development;

Qualifications:
- Knowledge of the dairy industry (agriculture) is beneficial, but not required;
- Bachelor’s degree in information technology, or related field, with five or more years of experience in network administration preferred (a combination of successful experience and education will be considered);
- Certified Network Engineer (CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network A+, CompTIA Sec+) preferred;
- Experience in enterprise-resource-planning (ERP) systems required (Acumatica preferred);
- Outstanding communication and people skills, with service-oriented attitude;
- Must be self-directed and motivated with a high degree of initiative;

The full-time DHI Specialist is an integral part of a dairy farm’s professional consulting team. Vast information impacting herd productivity, cattle health, animal welfare, sustainability, and profitability can conveniently and accurately be revealed with just a few ounces of milk. As a DHI Specialist, a major part of this career opportunity will be to advise customers on testing services to support an efficient, healthy, and profitable cow herd. DHI Specialists collect milk samples, process paperwork, and assist dairy farmers with data analysis and decision-making to benefit the future of their operations.
Day-to-day responsibilities:
- Transport DHI-testing equipment and racks with vials to farm;
- Set up and plug in testing meters;
- Computer work editing cows sold, calved, dried up, etc.;
- Visit and enjoy good conversation;
- Accurately collect milk samples and coordinating cow identification;
- Properly identify vials that need diagnostic testing (i.e. milk-pregnancy test, A1/A2, etc.)
- Wash DHI-testing equipment;
- Computer work to check for errors, ensure accuracy, and transfer data to laboratory;
- Invoice customer using company program;
- Organize shipping or delivery (depending on location) of vials to laboratory for component and diagnostic testing;
- Schedule future DHI milk-testing days; and
- Once lab work is complete, assist customer in analyzing test-day data and reports to help with herd management.
- DHI Specialists also spend time with our A.I./genetics business unit working together to prospect and grow business.
Qualifications:

The full-time DHI Specialist is an integral part of a dairy farm’s professional consulting team. Vast information impacting herd productivity, cattle health, animal welfare, sustainability, and profitability can conveniently and accurately be revealed with just a few ounces of milk. As a DHI Specialist, a major part of this career opportunity will be to advise customers on testing services to support an efficient, healthy, and profitable cow herd. DHI Specialists collect milk samples, process paperwork, and assist dairy farmers with data analysis and decision-making to benefit the future of their operations.
Day-to-day responsibilities:
- Transport DHI-testing equipment and racks with vials to farm;
- Set up and plug in testing meters;
- Computer work editing cows sold, calved, dried up, etc.;
- Visit and enjoy good conversation;
- Accurately collect milk samples and coordinating cow identification;
- Properly identify vials that need diagnostic testing (i.e. milk-pregnancy test, A1/A2, etc.)
- Wash DHI-testing equipment;
- Computer work to check for errors, ensure accuracy, and transfer data to laboratory;
- Invoice customer using company program;
- Organize shipping or delivery (depending on location) of vials to laboratory for component and diagnostic testing;
- Schedule future DHI milk-testing days; and
- Once lab work is complete, assist customer in analyzing test-day data and reports to help with herd management.
- DHI Specialists also spend time with our A.I./genetics business unit working together to prospect and grow business.
Qualifications:
- Animal-agricultural background;
