The full-time DHI Specialist is an integral part of a dairy farm’s professional consulting team. Vast information impacting herd productivity, cattle health, animal welfare, sustainability, and profitability can conveniently and accurately be revealed with just a few ounces of milk. As a DHI Specialist, a major part of this career opportunity will be to advise customers on testing services to support an efficient, healthy, and profitable cow herd. DHI Specialists collect milk samples, process paperwork, and assist dairy farmers with data analysis and decision-making to benefit the future of their operations.Day-to-day responsibilities:
- Transport DHI-testing equipment and racks with vials to farm;
- Set up and plug in testing meters;
- Computer work editing cows sold, calved, dried up, etc.;
- Visit and enjoy good conversation;
- Accurately collect milk samples and coordinating cow identification;
- Properly identify vials that need diagnostic testing (i.e. milk-pregnancy test, A1/A2, etc.)
- Wash DHI-testing equipment;
- Computer work to check for errors, ensure accuracy, and transfer data to laboratory;
- Invoice customer using company program;
- Organize shipping or delivery (depending on location) of vials to laboratory for component and diagnostic testing;
- Schedule future DHI milk-testing days; and
- Once lab work is complete, assist customer in analyzing test-day data and reports to help with herd management.
- DHI Specialists also spend time with our A.I./genetics business unit working together to prospect and grow business.
Qualifications:

Experience a career working with CentralStar Cooperative, the genetic and reproductive leader of artificial insemination (A.I.) in dairy and beef cattle with the largest and fastest-growing Dairy Herd Information (DHI) program in the United States. This position will work closely with genetics, technology, and reproductive consulting for dairy producers and fellow team members. The goal is to provide and implement genetic- and reproductive-management recommendations to dairy producers using dairy-technology and herd-management programs in cooperation with Select Sires, Zoetis, CowManager, DHI, and more.Day-to-day responsibilities:
- Communicate with producers to design breeding programs for meeting individual genetic and reproductive needs.
- Utilize tools and programs to analyze, monitor, and troubleshoot reproductive problems or opportunities.
- Action programs and tools to implement on-farm strategies to optimize the number of replacement females with superior genetics.
- Schedule and provide the Select Mating Service (SMS) program to dairy producers in CentralStar Cooperative’s Michigan and Indiana market area. This includes, but is not limited to implementation of genomic data, analysis of herd pedigrees, and linear evaluation of cows.
- Utilize data to develop progress reports for review with herd owners and the CentralStar Cooperative team.

Qualifications:
- A minimum of 3-5 years’ experience in the dairy-cattle industry is necessary;
- A bachelor’s degree in dairy/animal science, agribusiness, or a related area is preferred, but not required;

This route includes the surrounding areas around and in-between southern Michigan and Indiana. The work day starts at 5 a.m.Your purpose:
Under the direction and supervision of the Laboratory Supervisor, this position operates a CentralStar Cooperative delivery vehicle (no CDL required) on regularly-scheduled, established routes to pick up and/or deliver milk samples and other supplies as directed. Works closely with the Laboratory Supervisor in Grand Ledge, Mich., DHI Specialists, and other CentralStar Cooperative personnel to communicate route changes and other relevant route information.Day-to-day responsibilities:
- Prepare complete schedule for one week at a time;
- Communicate with field staff about time and place to meet;
- Can start each day from Grand Ledge laboratory or home with empty racks and sample vials in a rear-wheel-drive transit van;
- Drive to home offices of DHI field staff or directly to farms after testing is completed;
- Unload empty racks of sample vials for field staff to use the next day;
- Load racks of test-ready sample vials;
- Confirm samples and paperwork are all present;
- Drive to Grand Ledge, Mich., laboratory;
- Unload racks of test-ready sample vials;
- Reload empty racks of vials for use the next day;
- Other duties as assigned.
